The fast response of Sahel precipitation to climate change allows effective mitigation action

چکیده
Abstract Climate change will drive major perturbations of the West African summer monsoon. A zonal contrast in precipitation develop at end century, with an increase over central Sahel and a decrease western Sahel. Such results from antagonist effects fast (due to enhanced radiative warming land, North Hemisphere, relative South Hemisphere) slow (associated long-term changes oceanic circulation) responses increasing greenhouse gases. While such have already been assessed, less attention has given their temporality, issue importance promote efficient mitigation adaptation measures. Here, we analyse future evolution decomposed into response, showing that response dominates one. From this evidence, highlight strategies may be successful reducing effect climate on within few decades, by muting response. This decomposition also allows for better understanding uncertainty model predictions Africa.

Climate Change Mitigation Strategies in Fast- Growing Countries: The Benefits of Early Action
This paper builds on the assumption that OECD countries are (or will soon be) taking actions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. These actions, however, will not be sufficient to control global warming, unless developing countries also get involved in the cooperative effort to reduce GHG emissions. This paper investigates the best short-term strategies that emerging economies can adopt in...
متن کاملAdapting to drought in the Sahel: Lessons for climate change
The Sahel’s experience of adapting to changes in rainfall on a scale at least comparable to that of climate change scenarios, between the 1960s and the 1990s, suggests that lessons can be learnt that may have a wider utility for policy in the future. The Sahel is a major global agroecological region and its success in adaptation will influence the achievement of the global Millennium Developmen...
متن کاملRelationship of Sahel Precipitation and Atmospheric Centers of Action
The dynamics associated with drought in the Sahel have attracted considerable attention in the recent literature. This paper evaluates Sahel precipitation using the paradigm of the atmospheric centers of action, that is, the extended semipermanent highs and lows that dominate regional circulations and are evident in sea level pressure patterns. We find that Sahel precipitation is significantly ...
متن کاملImpact of internal variability on projections of Sahel precipitation change
The impact of the increase of greenhouse gases on Sahelian precipitation is very uncertain in both its spatial pattern and magnitude. In particular, the relative importance of internal variability versus external forcings depends on the time horizon considered in the climate projection. In this study we address the respective roles of the internal climate variability versus external forcings on...
